The skinny: Piano prodigy Lun (Jay Chou) goes to a new music school and meets an elusive girl, Yu (Kwai Lun-mei).
They fall in love over ice cream, sunsets, bicycle rides and pianoduets, but she disappears after a misunderstanding and leaves him to unravel the mystery.
The review: Taiwanese singer JayChou seems ambitious to try to blend romance, action, suspense and even a hint of fantasy in his first movie as writer and director.
I initially feared that Secret would be no more than a vanity project, an extended music video with all style and no substance.
But Jay is much more creative than you would imagine.
He manages to make the different elements of the movie work, and he also injects this seemingly simple lovestory with an ingenious twist - making it mesmerising.
To name it Secret also creates a certain level of anticipation.
Cliched plot twists come to mind - will it be like Sixth Sense, Romeo & Juliet or Thunderstorm?
But the way Jay derails the story is logic-defying, and yet, believable enough to make you root for the star-crossed lovers and hope that their love can transcend time andtrial.
As a director, Jay is meticulous in making every detail count, like using the evergreen song Lover's Tears and a faded photograph.
He did have help, of course, most notably from cinematographer Lee Pin-bing (The Matrimony, After This Our Exile), who injects asense of nostalgia into the background.
The first half of the film may be a little too sweet for some, as it pans out like a typical high-school romance - with a third party, even.
But when the twist is revealed midway, you'll be hanging on to your seat as you follow Lun in his quest for thetruth.
As an actor, Jay comes across as a natural because he basically plays himself. He is especially captivating to watch when tickling the ivories and he gets to show off every skill he has in his music bag of tricks.
He also has good chemistry with the rest of the cast, which he personally hand-picked.
However, it is Lun-mei's moving portrayal of a strong-willed girl torn between love and reality that steals the show.
One piece of advice: Don't blink during the last scene or you might miss something really crucial.
The one scene that justifies the ticket price: Let's just say it has to do with Jay and an old grand piano.
The one scene that will eject you from your seat: None.
Best quote: When Yu asks why he likes to play the piano single-handed, Lun replies: 'Because I want to hold your hand with my other hand.'
Moral of the story: Have secret, don't tell.
SECRET
STARRING: Jay Chou, Kwai Lun-mei, Anthony Wong
WRITER/DIRECTOR: Jay Chou
RATING: 4/5
Hahas. In this show, Jay Chou's called Ye Xiang Lun (Which obviously sounds like Nightsoil Lun) and the girl's called Rain! :D I'd give this show 5 stars as Jay Chou somehow perfectly injected humour, suspense, sadness, and also fear. The story started out as a normal love story that was rather simple but when it comes to the part whereby words start to appear on the table where Jay Chou was.. It makes you think.. Is it a ghost story? How did he end up loving a ghost? But no. It wasn't a ghost. It was just time travel and it's amazing that you play this particular piano piece and you travel to 20 years later or before.
I was so choked and tears were like welling up in my eyes constantly and finally at one moment, I broke down and cry. Sorry la! I'm a super emotional big crybaby. There's nothing you can do about it though. I'm so so so emotional that I cry at the slightest thing ok? But this show is really worth it. Yes, really! Everything's so emo and suddenly Anthony Wong just goes like mad and you'll start laughing. I give it a super big thumbs up sign :D
